How much does Google Ads cost? The short, honest breakdown
Google Ads costs you two things combined. First, the ad budget that goes to Google: you pay per click. Second, the management fees for someone to set up, structure and steer your campaigns.
For Dutch SMBs, a realistic start is from approx. €500–€1,500 in ad budget per month, plus from approx. €300–€1,000 in management fees per month if you outsource. If you run it yourself, the management fee falls away, but you invest time and learning costs instead.
Why these ranges? Because your cost per click (CPC) depends heavily on your industry. From a few cents in a local niche to more than €15 in legal segments. Further down you'll find a table with CPC ranges per SMB industry.
At the bottom of section 4 there's a calculator table with three scenarios (small, average and ambitious SMBs) so you can quickly estimate which range your campaign falls in.
| Cost layer | From per month | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Ad budget (to Google) | €500–€1,500 | What you pay per click × expected clicks |
| Management (agency or in-house) | €300–€1,000 | Setup, optimisation, reporting, bidding strategy |
| One-time setup (optional) | €500–€2,500 | Account build, conversion tracking, landing pages |
The 3 cost layers explained: budget, management, setup
Most quotes mix ad budget and management fees together. That makes comparing hard, intentional or not. We always split them, so you know exactly where every euro goes.
Layer 1: Ad budget, what you pay Google directly
This is the money that goes straight to Google, per click. You only pay when someone actually clicks your ad. The amount depends on your industry, your competition and your Quality Score. From approx. €500 per month is realistic for a local SMB campaign; for wider reach or pricier industries that quickly rises to €1,500 or more.
Layer 2: Management fees, the time the agency or you invest
This is the fee for setting up, structuring, monitoring and optimising your campaigns. Agencies usually charge a fixed fee, a percentage of your media budget, or a performance-based model. From approx. €300 per month for small campaigns; €600–€1,000 for average SMB campaigns with active optimisation. If you do it yourself, you spend on average 4–8 hours per week on campaign management.
Layer 3: One-time setup, everything that needs to be in place before click 1
Before your ads can even show, you need account structure, keyword research, ad copy, conversion tracking and usually a solid landing page. Some agencies charge this separately (from approx. €500 for a basic setup, from approx. €2,500 for conversion-focused landing pages); others fold it into the first month of management. Always ask about this explicitly.
What do you pay per click? CPC per industry (SMBs)
Your cost per click (CPC) is the most important number in your budget. Multiply your average CPC by the number of clicks you want and you have your ad budget.
The CPC ranges below are indicative agency benchmarks for the Dutch market, based on averages for the ten SMB industries we work with. Your own account data is always leading; this is a starting point for estimation.
| Industry | CPC (from, indicative) | Own sector page |
|---|---|---|
| Accountants & bookkeeping firms | €2.50–€6 | /voor/accountants |
| Dentists | €3.50–€8 | /voor/tandartsen |
| Restaurants & hospitality | €0.50–€2 | /voor/restaurants |
| Installers (plumbing, HVAC, electrical) | €3–€9 | /voor/installateurs |
| Lawyers & legal services | €6–€18 | /voor/advocaten |
| Hairdressers & beauty | €0.80–€2.50 | /voor/kappers |
| Physiotherapists | €2–€5 | /voor/fysiotherapeuten |
| Auto shops & garages | €1.50–€4 | /voor/autobedrijven |
| Webshops (broad) | €0.60–€3 | /voor/webshops |
| Construction & contractors | €3–€8 | /voor/bouwbedrijven |
Calculator table: work out your Google Ads budget
Three scenarios to help you estimate which range your campaign falls in. Formula: average CPC × desired clicks per month = ad budget.
Then keep going: at, say, a 3% conversion rate (typical for SMB services) on 300 clicks you end up with 9 inquiries. At an average customer value of €1,500 and a 30% margin, just 1 new customer is more than enough to cover the month.
| Scenario | Avg. CPC | Clicks/mo | Ad budget | + Management (from) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small / local | €1.50 | 300 | €450 | €300 |
| Average SMB | €3.50 | 600 | €2,100 | €600 |
| Ambitious / competitive niche | €7.00 | 1,000 | €7,000 | €1,000 |
What's the minimum budget you actually need?
Below approx. €300 in ad budget per month you rarely get statistically relevant data to optimise on. Google's algorithms learn from clicks and conversions; too little volume means your campaign keeps groping in the dark.
Our lower bound for a meaningful start: approx. €500 in ad budget per month for a single, focused campaign (for example, one service in one city). Below that, local SEO or Google Business Profile optimisation will do more for you.
- Determine your average customer value (revenue × margin). Don't know it exactly? Use a conservative estimate.
- Determine your conversion rate (inquiry-to-customer). SMB services usually sit between 20–40%.
- Determine your desired number of new customers per month.
- Work backwards: customers × customer-to-lead ratio = leads needed. Leads / your landing page conversion rate = clicks needed. Clicks × average CPC = ad budget.
- Round up and add a 20% margin for testing room in the first 2–3 months.
Management fees: which pricing models exist?
Agencies calculate management fees in one of three ways. Each model has pros and cons, depending on your situation.
At Organiq Grow we use a fixed fee from €300 per month for smaller engagements and a hybrid model for larger campaigns. No hidden percentages, and you're never locked into long contracts: cancel monthly.
| Model | From per month | Who it fits | Downside |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed fee | €300–€1,000 | Predictable budgets; smaller campaigns | Agency has no incentive to grow your budget |
| % of media budget (10–20%) | 10–20% × budget | Growing campaigns; larger accounts | Can get expensive at high budgets; agency may prefer a higher budget |
| Performance / no-cure-no-pay | Variable | E-commerce with sharp attribution | Rarely truly performance-only; ask about the base fee |
Do AI Max and Search Themes change your costs in 2026?
Google's AI Max (broader match) and Search Themes (Performance Max) are two big 2026 shifts. Both expand Google's automation, and both change how your budget gets allocated.
AI Max broadens the match of your keywords automatically, which can lead to lower average CPCs but less control over where your ad money goes. Search Themes in Performance Max lets you steer direction without explicitly targeting every search query.
What does that mean for your budget? In practice, we see a 10–20% lower average CPC with AI Max on new SMB campaigns, combined with more variance in traffic quality. More active monitoring is required, which can push the management layer slightly higher in exchange for a lower media-budget layer.

DIY or outsource? The cost trade-off
The pure money trade-off looks temptingly simple: outsource means adding a management fee, DIY means no fee. But the time-and-learning-cost side is where most SMB owners get it wrong.
Starting on your own takes on average 4–8 hours per week on setup and optimisation in the first 3 months, plus 2–4 hours per week after that. Multiply that by your own hourly rate: at €75/hr, 4 hours a week is approx. €1,200 per month of your own time. Compare that to a management fee from €300.
The second factor is learning cost. In your first 2–3 months you often waste 20–40% of your budget on mediocre keywords, wrong bidding strategies and poorly set up conversion tracking. Most of that learning cost you skip with an experienced agency.
We have a separate guide on the outsource-versus-DIY trade-off for SMBs, including the signals for when each choice makes sense.
When Google Ads is NOT profitable for your SMB
We'd rather say this up front than after the fact: Google Ads isn't the right choice for every SMB owner. Four situations where you're better off doing something else first.
- Your customer value is too low. With an average customer value below approx. €100 and competitive CPCs, the math simply doesn't add up. Consider local SEO or Google Business Profile first.
- Your website converts below 1%. Then you waste ad budget on traffic that doesn't convert. Fix your landing pages first; only then does Google Ads make sense.
- You have no conversion tracking. Without measurement you can't optimise and you waste 30–50% of your budget in the dark. Set this up before launch.
- Your market is too local for Google search volume. Some niches (super-hyper-local services) simply don't have enough search volume. Then Meta Ads, community marketing or local networking will be more effective.
What does Google Ads cost at Organiq Grow?
With us, Google Ads management starts from €300 per month for smaller local campaigns. That excludes the ad budget that goes to Google.
For that you get: account build or audit, keyword research, ad copy, conversion tracking, weekly optimisation, monthly reporting and direct access to your account. No yearly contract, no hidden percentages.
For larger campaigns we work with a hybrid model: a lower fixed fee combined with a small percentage of the media budget. That way you never pay more than needed when your budget stays small, and we share the upside when your budget grows responsibly.
