What is Meta Ads?
Meta Ads is the advertising platform for Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and the Audience Network, all managed through one interface (Meta Ads Manager). You target audiences based on interests, behaviour and demographics, or let the platform largely determine the audience itself.
By 2026, nearly all successful Meta advertising runs through the Advantage+ suite: AI-driven automation that optimises targeting, placement and budget allocation, replacing the manual campaign structures that were standard just a few years ago.
Difference from Google Ads
Google Ads is intent-based: people actively search for something and you show up at the moment of demand. Meta Ads is discovery-based: people scroll through their feed and get interrupted with a relevant offer they weren't actively searching for.
That difference defines each channel's role. Google captures existing demand; Meta creates awareness and introduces new demand. Conversion rates per click are often lower on Meta than on Google, but CPMs are typically lower and reach is broader. The strongest SME strategies combine both: Google for ready-to-buy searchers, Meta for brand building and tapping new audiences.
Campaign objectives in 2026
Meta has simplified its objective list: Awareness, Traffic, Engagement, Leads, App promotion and Sales are the six main categories. For most SMEs, Leads and Sales are the primary objectives — they drive directly toward measurable results. Awareness is mainly worthwhile with budget to spare, for longer-term brand building.
Advantage+ shopping campaigns
Since 2023, Advantage+ has been AI-first, and by 2026 it's the dominant way of advertising on Meta for both e-commerce and lead generation. The algorithm automatically optimises budget, placement and creative combinations based on a broad pool of ad material, instead of you manually managing separate ad sets.
That requires less micromanagement, but it does require enough creative variety to choose from, and a properly configured Conversions API so the algorithm can learn which combination performs best.
The creative-first era
Video beats static imagery, and user-generated content (UGC) beats polished studio shots. The Reels format dominates most placements, and the hook in the first one to three seconds determines whether someone keeps watching or keeps scrolling.
Because the algorithm handles most of the targeting itself via Advantage+, creative testing has become more important than manual targeting optimisation in 2026. Whoever tests more creative variants wins faster.
Targeting restrictions in 2026
Special Ad Categories — housing, employment and credit — have had restricted targeting options since 2019: no targeting by age, gender or postcode. Apple's App Tracking Transparency (since iOS 14.5, 2021) continues to affect cross-app tracking, pushing Meta to rely increasingly on its own platform data and the Conversions API instead of device-level tracking through the browser pixel alone.
Conversions API: server-side tracking
The Conversions API sends conversion data directly from your server to Meta, alongside (not instead of) the browser pixel. It compensates for data loss caused by ad blockers, Safari's ITP and iOS privacy restrictions, and improves attribution, and therefore the learning quality of your Advantage+ campaigns.
You can implement it via Meta's own server-side API, a ready-made plugin for Shopify or WooCommerce, or a server-side tag container. See also our article on server-side tagging via GTM for the broader infrastructure.
Budget and bidding: CBO vs ABO
Campaign Budget Optimization (CBO) lets Meta automatically distribute budget across ad sets within a campaign based on performance. Ad Set Budget Optimization (ABO) gives you manual control per ad set. By 2026, with Advantage+ as the default, CBO has become the near-universal choice; ABO is mainly still used for strongly divergent audiences you deliberately want to budget separately.
| Feature | CBO | ABO |
|---|---|---|
| Budget allocation | Automatic by Meta | Manual per ad set |
| Management time | Low | Higher |
| Best for | Similar audiences, Advantage+ | Strongly divergent audiences |
Attribution models
7-day-click and 1-day-view has been Meta's default setting since the post-iOS 14 changes (previously 28-day-click and 1-day-view). That means a conversion up to seven days after a click, or one day after only viewing the ad without a click, gets attributed to that ad.
This window is often stricter than the attribution settings in Google Ads. When comparing results across channels, make sure you're looking at the same time window, otherwise you're comparing skewed numbers.
Reporting and optimisation frequency
Check weekly on frequency (ad fatigue typically sets in from around 3 to 4), the CPM trend and cost-per-result. Refresh creatives monthly to stay ahead of fatigue. Do a broader review each quarter of your objective mix and the budget split between Meta and your other channels.
When to use Meta Ads, and when not
B2C with a visual product or service — webshops, hospitality, beauty, coaching, real estate — is usually a strong fit for Meta Ads. B2B with a high deal value and long sales cycle is often less suited as a primary channel, unless LinkedIn Ads becomes too expensive for your target audience size: LinkedIn CPMs are typically three to five times higher than Meta's. In that case, Meta can work well as a complementary channel for retargeting website visitors.
What does Meta Ads management cost?
Management fees and ad spend are two separate line items. We work with a fixed monthly fee starting from an entry-level rate for management, separate from your own advertising budget. A realistic starting ad spend for most SME industries is from a few hundred euros a month — enough to generate sufficient learning data for Advantage+ to optimise well.
