"Get found better online" is a frustrating phrase for most SME owners in Brabant. You hear it everywhere — SEO, Google Business Profile, AI Overviews — but what actually works in 2026, and what does it cost if you don't want to hire a €120/hour agency?
We ran the test on our own site. From our Search Console data (May-August 2026): 4,570 impressions in 90 days, three clicks. Average position: 46 to 83. Site technically fine — no thin content, no broken schema, all local signals present. And yet: only visible on page 5. Recognisable? Then this is for you. Seven concrete steps that make the difference in 2026 — plus what you consciously should NOT do.
Step 1: Fix your Google Business Profile first
GBP is still the cheapest lead source for SMEs. A complete profile with photos, review flow and the right categories appears in the Local Pack (top-3 map) and for "near me" searches — before the organic top 10.
What concretely
- Fill all categories — primary + up to 9 secondary (e.g. "marketing agency" primary; "SEO agency", "web design agency" secondary).
- Opening hours current — also holidays, also 24/7 if you handle emergencies.
- At least 10 photos — interior, exterior, team, projects. No stock.
- Automate review requests — QR card on delivery + follow-up email after 7 days.
- Weekly post — GBP posts (offer, news, event) are read by Google.
In Brabant, the Local Pack around larger cities (Tilburg, Eindhoven, Breda, Den Bosch, Helmond) is competitive but not hopeless. In smaller towns (Waalwijk, Oss, Uden), top-3 is often achievable in 3-6 months with a consistently maintained profile.
Step 2: Rewrite titles and meta descriptions on your existing pages
This is the single fastest fix. Our audit found 24 pages on our own site with 50+ impressions and zero clicks — only because the title was generic ("Full-service marketing agency") instead of benefit-driven ("More clients from your region").
What concretely
- For every page with 100+ impressions in Search Console: check the position.
- At position 20-50: title + meta rewrite can bring clicks directly without a ranking boost.
- Formula: primary keyword · benefit for reader · optional: year or differentiator.
- Avoid: 'full-service', 'quality', 'experience' — that's agency-speak, not client-speak.
Step 3: Ensure local schema markup on every city page
Google and AI tools (ChatGPT, Perplexity) read structured data to determine what a page "is". Without LocalBusiness schema with address, opening hours and areaServed, Google isn't sure your SME sits in Waalwijk — and the competitor who has it set up right wins.
What concretely
- JSON-LD with @type LocalBusiness (or more specific: ProfessionalService, HomeAndConstructionBusiness for your industry).
- Per city page an own address block and areaServed.
- hasMap linking to your Google Business Profile.
- aggregateRating — only if it's genuinely true (Google detects fake ratings since 2024).
- sameAs with LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook (strengthens entity signal for AI tools).
Quick to check: paste your URL into Google's Rich Results Test. See "0 valid items detected"? Then this is step 1 for you.
Step 4: Content per city, not per national term
Google has become strict on duplicate content. A city page that only changes "SEO in Tilburg" to "SEO in Breda" is recognised as thin content and no longer ranked. And visitors don't click through.
What concretely
- Every city page must have unique content: neighbourhoods you serve, local references, typical SME mix in that region.
- Mention natural keywords for that city: in Tilburg often 'Piushaven', '013', 'Reeshof'; in Eindhoven 'Brainport', 'Woensel'; in Breda 'Ginneken', 'Chassé'.
- Add a section: 'In [city] we mostly work for…' with a genuine picture of your client mix.
- Not 10 city pages that are 90% identical — Google indexes one and demotes the rest.
Step 5: LinkedIn Company and directory listings for entity signal
Google's algorithm tries to establish whether your business ACTUALLY exists. One website isn't enough. Google wants to find you back on at least five to ten external platforms.
Minimum set for SME Brabant
- LinkedIn Company (more important than personal profile).
- Chamber of Commerce number on your site (transparency signal).
- Bedrijvengids.nl, MKB Nederland, Bing Places, DuckDuckGo Local.
- Industry-specific: e.g. KNMT for dentists, BOVAG for car dealers.
- Consistent NAP (Name/Address/Phone) — one differing comma and Google doubts.
Step 6: Backlinks from local sources
Without authority you stay at position 40-80. Backlinks are still the most important external factor.
What DOES work for SME
- Local news platforms (BN DeStem, Brabants Dagblad, Eindhovens Dagblad) — give an expert quote.
- Industry associations — profile page with link.
- Clients in a B2B relationship — case page they link to (with their permission).
- Sponsorship of local events that have a website.
- Guest blog on industry-specific platforms.
What does NOT work (Google penalises)
- Paid link placements on unclear sites.
- Directory spam ("submit to 500 directories").
- Reciprocal links ("I link to you if you link to me") in bulk.
Realistic pace for SME: 1-2 relevant links per month — that's enough to visibly rise over 12 months.
Step 7: Visibility in AI Overviews and ChatGPT
In 2026, an estimated 15-25% of serious search queries end up in AI answers (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) — before anyone clicks a blue link. If your brand doesn't appear there, you miss clients who used to click through via Google.
What concretely — GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)
- Question-answer content: pages that literally answer questions ('What does SEO cost for SME?', 'Best marketing agency Tilburg?').
- Cite sources (statistics, laws, industry rules) — AI tools cite you back if you cite others.
- Make sure AI crawlers can crawl your site (check your robots.txt for GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot).
- llms.txt at your root (optional but signalling).
- Measure: ChatGPT prompt "best [industry] [your city]". Do you appear? If not: what does? Those competitors are your benchmark.
What NOT to do
- Don't buy paid SEO courses — the content is free online, time is the bottleneck.
- Don't have your content written by unreviewed AI — Google's Helpful Content Update penalises "content without own expertise".
- Don't make 20 pages at once — 5 good pages beat 50 mediocre ones, always.
- Don't go to a €120/hour agency without a clear outcome — the "we do SEO" package is too vague.
- Don't stop after 3 months — SEO in Brabant takes 4-9 months for first visible movement.
What to do if it's too much
These are seven steps; realistically it takes 6-12 months and 40-80 hours of your own time (or the equivalent in hired hours). If you don't have that time, that doesn't have to be a problem — but look for an agency that: charges a fixed monthly fee (no hourly invoices), agrees on concrete quarterly KPIs (position, impressions, leads), lets you keep your own access to Google Business Profile and Search Console, and doesn't require a 12+ month minimum contract without interim review.
